TRAINING SEMINAR "INVESTIGATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF TORTURE ACCORDING TO THE ISTANBUL PROTOCOL"

The International Training Seminar (Training of Users) "Investigation and Documentation of Torture according to the Istanbul Protocol" was held in hotel Norcev (Fruska Gora) from 22 nd to 26 th October 2007 .
The training was organized by the IRCT - International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims and IAN - International Aid Network, as a part of the international project Prevention through Documentation 2006-2008.
The training was conducted with the aim to introduce participants with and/or enhance their knowledge about the Istanbul Protocol as an internationally recognized instrument (manual) for effective investigation and documentation of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Fifty persons (medical and legal experts) from different GOs (courts, prosecutor offices, health centers, psychiatric institutions, penitentiary institutions, etc) and NGOs (dealing with torture and human rights' violation issues) from the whole Serbia were invited to participate at the seminar.

The training was attended by 41 of them. They actively and cooperatively participated, provided suggestions and comments, exchanged experiences, which contributed to the successful realization of the training.
Training was conducted by international and national trainers and facilitators:

- Dr. Djordje Alempijevic, Forensic expert, Institute of Forensic Medicine
- Sandrina Speh Vujadinovic, Psychologist, Project Coordinator in IAN

International project Prevention through Documentation 2006-2008 is carried out by IRCT in collaboration with the World Medical Association, Human Rights Foundation Turkey , REDRESS and Physicians for Human Rights USA , as well as with local partners from five countries of the world where project has been realized ( Kenya, Philippines, Egypt, Ecuador, Serbia ) .
International Aid Network IAN is running the project in Serbia as national coordinator, in collaboration with other local partners: Belgrade Center for Human Rights and Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Belgrade .
