Workshop: Self sustainability of organisations providing ICT education (telecentres)

A telecentre is a place where people can access computers, the Internet, and other digital technologies that enable them to gather information, create, learn, and communicate with others while they develop essential digital skills. Their common focus is on the use of digital technologies to support community, economic, educational, and social development-reducing isolation, bridging the digital divide, creating economic opportunities, and reaching out to youth. Telecentres may be CSOs, independent agencies or enterprises, or a project of a national agency. Generally, there are four sizes of Telecentre: Micro (e-points), Mini (telecottages), Basic (teledomes) and Multi-purpose Telecentres.

The sustainability of telecentres is one of the most important issues for the success of increasing e-Inclusion of citizens, especially those belonging to vulnerable groups and living in rural areas.

The workshop presented different paths of sustainability among telecentres which are funded by public and/or government institutions, and telecentres that are independent of government and public, where financial sustainability is directly dependent upon the third party funding or commercial success of the services they provide.
