Basic demographic data
The majority of victims of torture presenting at the clinic are men (75%), reflecting the fact that men were more often incarcerated and tortured during the wars. Among the victims of torture, 94% of the overall numbers are refugees, with a much smaller number being citizens of Serbia who were tortured during the war (2.4%), and with only 2.8% citizens of Serbia who were victims of political violence. Most of our clients come from rural areas, are generally less educated, and are elderly: out of 641 clients in 2006, 84.7% were men, only 2.1% have had a university education, and 61.1% are unemployed. Out of the total number, 33.9% are Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Kosovo, 56.7% are refugees from Croatia or B&H, and 9.4% are from the local population of Serbia .
